ANSWERED

How much power does the ADAM require?

19V DC at 2.1 amps externally, 11 V DC internally from batteries.

Can you charge it through the USB ports?

No.

What does the supplied power adapter look like?

The universal charger shipped with ADAM comes with a US style dual blade plug.

[S] Model: MPA-40P[S]

Power Input:

100-240V~50/60Hz 1A Max

Volts supplied: 19 V
Amps supplied: 2.1 A

What are the physical dimensions of the charger plug?[S]

cylindrical void diameter = 1.69 mm

barrel length = 9.97 mm

barrel diameter = 4.00 mm

Radio Shack Model: 274-1532  works as a replacement.

When plugged in, there is a Green LED on the side opposite the label which should illuminate.

What do the colors of the LED charging indicator mean?

If ADAM is powered off and the AC adapter connected, the LED power indicator on the ADAM will illuminate one of three colors.

If the battery is low on power, the LED is RED.  If the battery is not fully charged the LED is purple  When fully charged to 100% the LED turns bright blue.

If you happen to drop ADAM and then plug it in, it may no longer charge but may still operate. If the power supply is plugged in and you have no LED

indication, try turning ADAM on and see if it still works.

Are the batteries User Replaceable?

According to Michelle of Notion Ink,

"I would like to inform you replacement of battery in Adam can be done only in authorized warranty center. If you open the battery of Adam then it will void the warranty service."

Which contradicts Rohan's statement of September 2010, and I quote: “This cylindrical section solved more purposes like placing traditional 3 cell batteries (and make it easily replaceable)...”[S].

So if you don't care about the warranty and simply want to access the battery stack,

or are just curious as to what's inside ADAM, here's how to do it.

We are not responsible for any damage you may cause to the various components of your ADAM whilst attempting this procedure.

First remove the rubber covers from the four screws.

Use a hobby knife or straight pin. The plugs are glued in.

Next remove the screws using a 2.4mm cross point driver

Next remove the rubber spine.

Place ADAM screen side down and break the spine away from the case bottom using a hobby knife or thin blade. I used a 25mm spatula to crack the connections

You need to break seven fused tabs to remove the spine.
The first latch is located between the HDMI port and the power switch. The second over the return button and the third over the headphone jack. There are three on the other side. Looking down on the ADAM, the first is about the middle of the four buttons on the screen. The second halfway between the volume and USB port and the third over the mini USB port. Using a thin blade and working against the frame and NOT the screen pry the side away from the top and slowly lift the front panel.
Here's a close up of the seven fused oval tabs which must be broken free. Batteries are removed for clarity. Top half of the photo is the bottom case of the ADAM and the spine is in the lower half of the photo. Once the bottom edge is free, lever it out by swinging the bottom edge out and down to unlock the keeper tabs on the screen side. Remove the spine. The three red tubes are the battery cells. There are three molded plastic latches on each side of the ADAM and five in the front. Turn ADAM so the screen is facing up and place a small screwdriver ontop of the speaker housing and under the top case and lightly lever the top up so you can see where the case separates. DO NOT Try and pull the screen off at this time as it will still be attached with five catches along the front edge.

Here I used a hobby knife to separate the lower case from the "magnaluminum" frame. There are five catches along the front.

One over the SD memory card slot and then about every 25mm along the front. There are none between the left side and the microphone hole.

While holding the top and bottom together, place ADAM front edge down and carefully separate the battery end away from the top panel. There are two cables you need to remove before the panels will lie flat. The first is located next to the 3G card. (Middle of photo) The other is connected to the left side USB board. (under the blue tape on the left) To remove the cables just lightly tug on them at the connectors. Once the touchscreen cable and the top button cable are removed the top panel can be rotated so that ADAM is flat. You do not need to remove the LCD panel connector from the motherboard. The battery pack is held in with two screws. Remove the screws and then disconnect the nine-strand power cable from the motherboard. Fish the wires out from under the left side USB board and the GPS antenna. (See next photo details)

Using the 2.4mm crosspoint screwdriver, remove the two screws.

One at each end of the pack.

Unplug the power connector at the motherboard. The three pink leads are the + supply and the three black leads are the - supply. The blue, white and yellow are for control of the pack and data readings. You may need to remove the screw holding the GPS antenna in order to snake the wires out from under it.

You should now have the three cell battery pack out of ADAM. The pack is labeled as a 2200 mAh 11.1V DC pack. Using Watt's Law of P=I*E the pack is 24.42wHr

(NOT 24.6wHr as listed on the NI Web)

The part number is listed as BT- A0B4 and

BTSCSYA0B411083002812

Assembly is the reverse order. Be careful you don't pinch any wires snapping the case back together.

What optimizations have been done to achieve extended battery life?

ADAM contains a dual core Tegra processor. The optimizations done to increase battery life include switching off the second core unless the running application demands more CPU usage. If the application demands more than 500MHz, only then does the second core start functioning.

How long do the batteries last?

Reports from users indicate the batteries can go flat in as little as two hours. Others have reported going all week on a charge.

I found using the ADAM in PQ mode for reading, no more than 20 mins at a time and turning off between sessions, I can go all week.

Fastest battery drain is using Wi-Fi and downloading files and playing Angry Birds. I can kill ADAM in as little as three hours.

My typical usage is to charge it up over night and it will last all the next day. Check out the surveys below.

How Long can you use your ADAM before recharging it?

How Long does a charge last?  How long does it take to recharge?

Battery construction in ADAM

“Next comes the batteries. It’s a 3 cell battery which you find in the laptops. There are very serious laws and regulations which one needs to follow while designing product with batteries as they are dangerous! We have 3 level of protection to stop any leakage or damage. First is on the batteries itself. Second comes from the body of the device and third from that green section (mesh plate). Ever wonder why is it there? It has beautiful automobile mesh texture which helps you grip, adds class to the over all design and acts like the 3rd protection for batteries.”
~ Rohan Shravan, from ‘Week-End Special – Part II’ at the NI blog on 25 September 2010

What are the tests done to estimate the battery life?

What has been provided so far is the use-case that leads to a 6-hr battery life. We would like to see proper testing done on the battery.

The use varies depending on the amount of ambient light.  The sensor automatically switches from Pixel Qi only mode to full LCD mode dependent on light.  In an interview Rohan, when pressed, said running on only PixelQi mode provided 16 to 17 hours of use. I've gotten more than 16 hours of "light" use with my PQ ADAM when not using it and having it in sleep mode. I've also run ADAM dry in less than six hours. Your mileage will vary. I charged mine up over night and then left it powered off for more than 31 hours. When checked the battery showed 100%. Others have claimed that their ADAMs lose 1 to 2% per hour when powered off.

Hi I have received a message from NI support that the ADAM will be shipped with an adapted power plug for the charger for Europe. Can anybody confirm this. (I cannot ask support again since that is my only reference)
